Every other Friday evening has become one of our favourite times of the week. After a busy work week, our volunteer team heads to the Sky Garden Project with the handpans, ready to spend the evening with a wonderful group of young people with special needs.
What started as introducing the handpan has gradually become something we all look forward to. Alongside music, we've shared games, dancing, laughter, and are now preparing together for an upcoming National Day performance.
One thing we've learned is that everyone connects with music differently. Some participants can't wait to play the handpan the moment they arrive, while others prefer to watch quietly before joining in. There is no right or wrong way to take part, and no expectation that everyone learns at the same pace. Every small step, whether it's playing a new rhythm, joining a game, or simply feeling comfortable enough to participate is worth celebrating.
Perhaps that's what we love most about the handpan. Its calming sound naturally brings people together, creating a space where everyone feels welcome to explore, and simply enjoy the moment.
What has made these sessions even more special is the support from the families. Parents are very much part of the experience. They join the games, encourage their children, laugh and dance with us, and are always ready to lend a hand, whether it's moving chairs, setting up the space, or helping the session run smoothly. Over time, these Friday evenings have begun to feel less like a music class and more like a community.
As we prepare for our upcoming National Day performance, we're not aiming for perfection. We simply hope every participant enjoys being on stage, feels proud to be part of it, and enjoys sharing the experience with everyone around them.
These Friday evenings have reminded us why we love sharing the handpan. It's not just about learning an instrument, it's about creating moments where people can connect, laugh, make music together, and feel a sense of belonging, regardless of age or ability.
As we look ahead, we hope this is just the beginning. We look forward to continuing our journey and bringing the joy of the handpan to more community spaces. If someone leaves with a smile, then every Friday evening has been worth it.
